The Crinan Hotel
Walking at Crinan
Crinan is an excellent base for walkers looking to explore the canal and the hills around the area, and it gives great access to the rest of Argyll.
Whether your preference is a short walk along the banks of the canal, a brisk walk up the local hills to view the breath-taking views out over the lochs and islands, or a serious morning's walk with a rewarding lunch at the end - then Crinan is the answer.
Here are just a few of the various established walks in the area:
Crinan Woods Circuit
The ancient Crinan Wood is managed by the Woodland Trust and the well maintained paths through it form part of this relatively gentle circuit which also takes in a stretch of the Canal.

The Castle Dounie Circuit
The Castle Dounie circuit which starts at Crinan is a wonderful forestry walk. Approx 4 miles (6km) in length it climbs high above the sea to give stunning views of Jura, Scarba and the Argyll coastline. Starting from picturesque Crinan harbour, it ascends to a dramatically situated iron-age fort on an airy summit. Please note the first section of the path can often be covered by the sea at high tide.

Crinan to Ardrishaig
It is possible to walk the entire length of the Crinan Canal from Ardrishaig to Crinan (or vice versa). The one way walk is approx 9 miles in length (14km). This route follows the canal as it links the Atlantic with Loch Fyne at Ardrishaig. The route overlooks the sea for the first part and then the focus is on the attractive, historic locks at Cairnbaan. The walk is a favourite with bird watchers. A bus links the start and finish.
