The Crinan Classic

Boat Festival 2007

Come and join us this year at Crinan Classic Boat Festival.

Crinan is a 250 year old picturesque fishing village located on the Atlantic side of the Crinan Canal, gateway to the Western Isles and well known to all Scottish Yachtsmen. The famous Crinan Hotel sits at the mouth of the canal with views over the loch.

The Crinan Classic is open to all wooden craft.

There will be events, cruising and racing for clinker dinghy’s, canoes, sailing boats, motor boats and fishing vessels. This year our guest class will be the international 8 metre racing sailing boats. These boats will have just finished a week of racing on the Clyde at the 100th anniversary 8 metre worldchampionships, the fleet will be from as far away as Australia.

Boats coming up to Crinan from the Clyde will come through the beautiful nine mile Crinan Canal. (Transit package can being arranged.)

The programme for the Crinan Classic is as follows:

Wednesday 25th July

Boats muster in Crinan for the inauguration of Crinan Classic. Watch the local pipe band arrive by sea on board the Puffer.

Accompany the band around the village, followed by a toast to the boats with a fine glass of Isle of Jura single malt whisky. Come and have another dram at the opening of the Crinan Classic Art Exhibition, a fine display of local talent located in the coffee shop and Hotel. Later come on up to the pub for some lively Scottish sounds. (PS: Don't forget a G.P.S so you can find your boat later!!)

Thursday 26th July

Our racing programme will start with a spectacular crossing of the Sound, 7 miles to the beautiful neighbouring island of Jura, (Island of the Deer). A muster and a barbecue will take place on the beach in one of the sheltered anchorages on the east coast. The sailing boats will be accompanied by the motor boats. Jura is the most sparsely populated part of the United Kingdom and on its northern shores lies the third largest whirlpool in the world - The Gulf of the Corryvrecken. (This race is weather permiting). Boats return to Crinan. Evening parade by the motorboats around loch Crinan. More Music.

Friday 27th July

After a belly full of hog rolls, board your boats for the second day of racing round the beautiful inner islands. On return to Crinan keep your lifejackets on for a host of shore-side and water based Highland Games. From dinghy racing, hurling the haggis, row-boat tug of war, to the transatlantic driving range. (Kilts supplied). Friday evening - Warm yourselves up with a few drams for our big Ceileidh bash (wild Scottish dancing) at Crinan Boat Yard.

Saturday 28th July

Even more hog rolls followed by 'Loch Crinan Ladies Race' - compulsory lady helm. Our festival will conclude with 'The General Race', open to all classic displacement motor boats including traditional fishing boats.

The festival will finish in good time, for those participating/spectating in West Highland Week, to be at Craobh Haven for the start on Sunday 29th July.
